The Transformative Power of Cannabis
An Interview with Kate Lily
The cannabis space is filled with educators and advocates, but few bring the depth of experience and passion that Kate Lily does. A certified cannabis sommelier and educator, Kate’s journey with cannabis began as a teenager and has evolved into a lifelong relationship that now informs her work in helping others navigate the often overwhelming cannabis marketplace.
A Life-Changing First Experience
For Kate, her first experience with cannabis was nothing short of transformative. “I first tried it when I was 15 out of a crushed Coke can with some friends,” she recalls. “And I just loved it. I felt more like myself than I ever had before.” From that moment, cannabis became a staple in her life, shifting through different seasons and uses, but always remaining a source of joy, creativity, and well-being.
Her story is one that many cannabis users can relate to—starting as youthful experimentation but evolving into a deep appreciation for the plant’s benefits. “I use it daily now, whether it’s to boost my mood, connect with nature on my walks, or enhance my enjoyment of music,” she shares. “It’s not just a part of my life—it’s something I’m truly passionate about.”

Breaking Stereotypes Through Education
Kate’s passion extends beyond personal use; it drives her mission to educate others about cannabis. As a former attorney with a 16-year legal career, she understands the importance of well-researched, fact-based education in destigmatizing cannabis use.
“A big part of my message is that you can use cannabis without your life falling apart,” she explains. “There’s this outdated idea that cannabis use leads to laziness or a lack of success, but I’ve had a long, stable career, I own a home, I have a family. Cannabis didn’t stop me from achieving any of that.”
Kate’s transition from law to cannabis education wasn’t immediate, but it was inevitable. “I realized that just because I was good at my legal career didn’t mean I had to keep doing it,” she says. “I started asking myself what truly excited me, and the answer was clear—I love talking about cannabis, helping people find the right products, and making the whole experience more accessible.”
One of the biggest hurdles for newcomers to cannabis is simply knowing where to start. With dispensary shelves lined with products boasting different cannabinoids, dosages, and consumption methods, the experience can be overwhelming. Kate’s mission is to help people make informed choices.
“My website is designed to be a beginner-friendly resource,” she says. “I offer educational articles, product recommendations, and even an Ask Kate section where people can reach out with specific questions.”
When guiding first-time cannabis users, Kate focuses on three key questions:
Why are you interested in cannabis? Are you seeking relaxation, better sleep, anxiety relief, or an alternative to alcohol?
What consumption method suits you best? Some people prefer smoking flower, while others gravitate toward edibles, tinctures, or beverages.
What dosage is right for you? “The biggest rookie mistake is starting with too high of a dose,” Kate warns. “I always recommend beginning with 2.5 to 5 mg for edibles. You can always take more, but you can’t take less.”
She also encourages keeping a cannabis journal to track what products and dosages work best. “Our bodies interact with cannabis uniquely, so a little self-experimentation is key to finding what works for you.”

The Cultural Shift: Cannabis as an Alternative to Alcohol
As cannabis gains wider acceptance, many people are turning to it as an alternative to alcohol. “During the pandemic, a lot of people realized they were drinking too much and started looking for other options,” Kate observes. “Cannabis beverages have made it incredibly easy to make that switch. Instead of reaching for a beer at a barbecue, you can have a cannabis-infused seltzer and avoid the hangover.”
She sees this trend continuing, particularly as CBD and hemp-derived THC products become more mainstream. “CBD-infused products are already everywhere—skincare, bath bombs, muscle rubs. These are often the gateway for people who are new to cannabis and skeptical about its effects.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Cannabis and Wellness
While the federal legal status of cannabis remains uncertain, Kate believes the wellness industry will continue embracing cannabis in various forms. “Hemp-derived cannabinoids will keep expanding because they’re more accessible,” she predicts. “And as long as people can order products online and have them discreetly shipped to their door, the market will keep growing.”
However, she cautions against blindly trusting every cannabis product on the market. “Not all brands are created equal,” she warns. “Some companies are doing things right, using high-quality ingredients and proper dosing, while others are just looking to make a quick buck. My job is to help consumers navigate that landscape and find the best products for their needs.”
