The Genesis of Fable Libations
The inspiration for Fable Libations traces back to 2014, during the early days of cannabis legalization in Colorado. Ben observed a subtle yet significant social divide emerging between those who drank alcohol and those who preferred cannabis. “In professional and personal settings, I’d see groups split—not combatively, but noticeably—between drinkers and non-drinkers,” Ben recalls.
One particular incident during a corporate leadership summit in Aspen struck a chord. Executives from around the world would discreetly step away to consume cannabis, only to return and continue drinking whiskey. “Everyone was in the same boat, but nobody acknowledged it,” Ben notes. This experience sparked a pivotal question: What if there was an adult beverage that allowed people to imbibe without the next-day hangover?
The Five-Year Journey of Innovation
Embarking on this quest was no small feat. “It took us 12 months just to realize we didn’t know what we were doing,” Ben admits with a laugh. Together with his partner Kristen, they began experimenting in their basement, attempting to replicate the bite of alcohol without the alcohol itself. Early efforts included distilling vinegar—a testament to their commitment, albeit with mixed results.
Recognizing the need for expertise, they collaborated with a flavor house but soon realized a pivot was necessary. Their goal wasn’t merely to create a vessel for THC; they aspired to craft a credible alcohol alternative that offered a genuine experience in consumption. This led them to partner with a formulation company renowned for working with giants like Starbucks, Danone, and Red Bull.
Over the next year, they focused on replicating the bite, burn, flavor arc, and viscosity of alcoholic drinks. Stability testing presented another set of challenges, as combining their chosen ingredients with cannabis emulsion was uncharted territory. Factors like the pH of real fruit, can liners, and ingredient sedimentation required meticulous attention.
The path to market was fraught with obstacles, not least of which was the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufacturing delays, ingredient shortages, and supply chain disruptions tested their resolve. “We ran headfirst into COVID. Our manufacturer had an Italian canning line, but we couldn’t get the Italians over to set it up,” Ben explains.
Simultaneously, the cannabis beverage market was exploding, with new products appearing rapidly. This increased competition heightened the urgency but also validated the demand for alternatives to alcohol. In January 2022, after more than five years of dedication, Fable Libations officially launched.

Fable’s cocktails are crafted to be layered and complex, with flavors that unfold over time. Using real blackberries, spices, and botanicals, each drink is an experience meant to be enjoyed slowly. “We want people to take their time, to chill it, to sip it—not slam it,” Ben says. This approach reflects their commitment to quality and the art of cocktail making.
Carving a Niche in a Crowded Market
Despite the proliferation of cannabis-infused beverages, Fable Libations distinguishes itself through its premium positioning and dedication to craftsmanship. The use of high-quality ingredients inherently positions Fable as a premium product. “Our ingredients cost more to make than a typical seltzer,” Ben points out. “We’re using ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper—the heart and soul of the drink.”
However, standing out in a saturated market remains a challenge. Ben acknowledges the need to communicate the benefits of Fable clearly to consumers. “We have to extract what’s inside Fable and show that as a clear differentiator,” he notes. This includes refining packaging, enhancing point-of-sale materials, and connecting authentically with their target audience, which data shows is primarily adults aged 40 and above.
A Mission to Disrupt and Innovate
Ben’s vision extends beyond building a successful brand; he aims to disrupt the alcohol industry itself. “I believe we can give adults a healthier means of decompressing at the end of the day,” he asserts. Recognizing that modern life is increasingly anxiety-inducing, he sees Fable as a solution to a societal tension.
“Non-alcoholic products can replicate the taste of an alcoholic beverage but not help someone take the edge off their day,” Ben explains. “If we can help someone go from drinking five days a week to twice a week by supplementing with Fable, that’s a generational disruption.”
Staying True to Their Values
Throughout this journey, Ben emphasizes the importance of remaining true to who they are. Despite market pressures to produce higher potency products or follow fleeting trends, Fable Libations stays committed to its core principles. “We resist the urge to jump in and let FOMO guide what we do,” Ben says. “It’s important to stay classy in life, in how we treat people, and in how we partner with others.”
